There was a homeless guy last night on the 6, making his pitch to the passengers to give him money for food: “I’m homeless, need a bite to eat, any donation would be appreciated, blah blah…” Since I was holding a lunch bag containing the last half of a sandwich that I couldn’t finish and an unwrapped brownie, I offered up my bag to the homeless man when he was walking past me. He looked at the contents of my bag skeptically and gruffly asked, “Has any of this been opened?” At that point, I was thinking of rescinding my offer; since when did beggars become choosers anyway? However, I held my tongue, took the sandwich out of the bag, and informed him that the brownie remaining was unwrapped. Only then did he take the bag from me and continue on his merry, ungracious way. Not even a thank you was uttered from this man. Now I’ll think twice when giving my food away to homeless people (or maybe I’ll just think twice when giving food away to *grumpy* homeless New Yorkers!).
